In late September, some of our team had the privilege of touring the Angela Wright Bennett Centre for Women and Children in Perth, Western Australia, ahead of its official opening. The seven-story, purpose-built facility is set to transform how family and domestic violence is addressed—not only in Western Australia but across the country. Ruah Community Services’ vision is to create a blueprint for recovery and healing that can be replicated nationwide, offering a brighter future for women and children seeking safety and support.

A holistic approach

Named in recognition of the Bennett family’s significant contribution to this project and their longstanding support of Ruah, the Angela Wright Bennett Centre represents a vital next step for women and their children affected by family and domestic violence.

Building on the immediate crisis accommodation provided by Ruah’s Safe Night Space, the Centre offers a comprehensive and integrated pathway to recovery. Housing Ruah’s Karlup Services – an Australia-first initiative – ensures that all the support needed can be found in one place. With bulk-billing general practice, dental services, financial counselling, legal support, employment education, and more, survivors can focus on healing without the added burden of navigating multiple systems or the re-traumatisation of retelling their stories to different service providers.

The Centre also features 13 self-contained accommodation units, providing a secure and private space for women and children during their recovery.

Karlup:

A Noongar Aboriginal word meaning “a place where you belong and feel safe.”

The impact of Ruah’s work

The Angela Wright Bennett Centre has already left a lasting impression, not just on those it supports but also on those who have had the opportunity to witness its purpose. One TSA Group employee who toured the Centre commented:

“Touring the Angela Wright Bennett Centre was a powerful reminder of the absolute need for such spaces in our communities. The challenges survivors of family and domestic violence face to seek support, especially those with children, are difficult to comprehend. The thought and care that has gone into this facility is inspiring. The building’s beautiful design, the extensive range of services, and the security provided—it was truly humbling to witness the Centre in person.”
